As the battle between the 3 broadcast stations come to a close, “Rooftop Prince” emerged victorious in the last round.

KBS2TV’s “The Equator Man” and MBC’s “The King2Hearts” as well as SBS’s “Rooftop Prince” started their broadcast on 21 May, and ended on 24 May.

The ratings war for these dramas were intense. Initially, it was “The King2Hearts”. This drama started off with a viewership of 16.2%, with “Rooftop Prince” at 9.8% and “The Equator Man” at 7.7% ratings.

However, after just 2 weeks, the ratings gap between the 3 stations’ dramas became a lot closer, and the battle intensified. On 5 April, the 6th episode of “Rooftop Prince” hit ratings of 12.5%, overtaking “The King2Hearts” which recorded 12.1% to take the top position. But due to the goverment elections, both “Rooftop Prince” and “The King2Hearts” delayed their broadcast, and with only “The Equator Man” airing, it recorded ratings of 14.3% and caught up with the others.

“The Equator Man” managed to maintain its top position, aside for the day after the elections (12 April) when it was beaten by “Rooftop Prince”, till the last episode, but “Rooftop Prince” managed a dramatic comeback and took over the no. 1 spot for this final episode.

Since Feb 7th till now, May 24th, these months have been really tough for everyone. Although the filming was tough, I was happy to receive so much love. Instead of acting skills, I have been very devoted as I sunk into the role and that is why there’s no regrets. I am happy because I’ve been able to have good relationships with Ji Min noona, and also the other actors and actresses till the end. Although there were some conflicts caused by the time constraints and the limitation of filming locations, I am really glad to have successfully finished this drama with all the staffs.

Overcoming his sadness, JYJ member Park Yoochun’s acting shone till the end.

In the SBS drama “Rooftop Prince”, the “Sugar cube” couple Lee Gak (Park Yoochun) and Park Ha (Han Jimin) share an emotional love that crosses through 300 years, and ended on 24 May.

The strict image of the crown prince from the Joseon era, the happy image in the modern day where he works hard to deal with society, and the tender image during his romantic moments with Park Ha, Yoochun displays various charms in his role, showing an even more mature image that helped drive the atmosphere of the drama.

Yoochun’s role as Lee Gak is in harmony with his previous characters in KBS 2TV’s “Sungkyunkwan Scandal” and MBC’s “Miss Ripley”, and he, who is well loved by the viewers, has expressed various characters well. With the unique nature of a Time slip, he had to move back and forth between a period drama and modern drama, and he performed both roles perfectly in a fresh and interesting manner.

Also, despite the the difficult period at the beginning of the drama where time was tight and his dearest father had left the world, he held it in and performed passionately, shining even brighter. During then, Yoochun, who returned to the set of “Rooftop Prince” earlier than expected to continue shooting, had thought of the fans, viewers, the staff who were working hard and felt that he could not wait any longer.

The happy ending for the time-travel romance drama, SBS’s “Rooftop Prince” has earned the viewers’ praise.

Broadcast on the night of 24 May, in the last episode of “Rooftop Prince”, the mystery of the crown princess murder was solved. Buyong (Played by Han Ji Min) had replaced the crown princess (Jung Yoomi) and fell into the Lotus pond to save her beloved Crown Prince Lee Gak (Park Yoochun) from the crown princess’s plot to murder him.

(Rest of the plot is omitted)

Park Ha, who opens a fruit juice store in Seoul meets Yong Taeyong who is a customer, but does not see his face as she is troubled. Later, she discovers a postcard at her door, with the signature “ㅌㅇ” and her sketch on it. Park Ha follows the card’s invitation and goes to Namsam tower, and meets Yong Taeyong there. Taeyong asks, “Why are you so late, I have been waiting for a long time” and Park Ha asks, “Where were you? I have been here all this while” and the two hold hands, as Taeyong becomes Lee Gak, dressed in his royal robes. With the commentary saying “Even after 300 years, I will still love you” and has a happy ending.

After the drama was broadcast, viewers responded, saying “It’s a happy ending, but my heart still aches. It’s sad that we won’t be able to see this sweet couple again” “This is the most beautiful ending among the recent dramas.” “This is my dream romance, both of them are beautiful” “Rooftop Prince, even after 300 years, I will still remember you” and other praises.

SPOILER ALERT. Stop reading if you didn′t finish the series!

From afar, the recently-wrapped SBS’ Rooftop Prince and MBC’s The King 2Hearts appear to be two completely different dramas with no relation.

Rooftop Prince was about a crown prince time warping into the present to solve the mysterious death of his wife, while The King 2Hearts was about the reunification of North and South Korea through the marriage of a king and a North Korean soldier.

When the dramas premiered on March 21, there was a battle of the ratings between the two, but a third competitor, KBS’ The Equator Man, soon climbed the ladder to take the top spot, turning the competition for second place between Rooftop Prince and The King 2Hearts into a battle of the two kings.

2 Different Kings

In The King 2Hearts, Lee Jae Ha is first introduced as a bratty, immature human being, who has been pampered and spoiled all of his life.

He sees nothing wrong with wasting the country’s taxes and taking everything for granted—simply because he can. He shows no interest in the country’s welfare, and the citizens consider him a royal pain in the ass, if nothing else.

But it′s this childish behavior that demands the drastic change in the drama when he is forced to become king after his older brother is murdered.

As the viewer, we see him grow up, surprising us each time he does something selfless. This growth reminds us that Lee Jae Ha isn’t some stupid prick, but actually a wise king who is capable of protecting the ones he loves and is willing to sacrifice his desires for someone else.

Who else was surprised when he outsmarted Kim Bong Gu in Episode 19? Kim Bong Gu definitely was.

On the contrary, Lee Gak’s first appearance in the drama, from the way he treated his wife and gave riddles to his sister-in-law, confirmed that he was a wise and kind-hearted king.

So, when he magically time warps into the present, all of that was expected to stay the same, because time traveling 300-something years into the future doesn’t change a person (or does it?)

There was, of course, a period when he demanded being treated like a king in the modern world, only to be ignored and cursed at for his pompous expectations.

But he soon returned to his normal self, solving mysteries and making every girl wish she was Park Ha.

In essence, it took Lee Jae Ha 10 or so episodes to become the king Lee Gak always was, so thumbs up for you, Lee Gak.

The problem with Lee Gak, however, is that there isn’t much character development. We knew from the beginning that he was smart. We knew he was sweet. The most surprising thing was how quickly he adjusted to the modern world, and the fact that he was able to con everyone into thinking he was Yong Tae Yong numerous times.

That’s not to say he was an entirely boring character. We just wish Lee Gak’s development had more highs and lows throughout the 20 episodes.

Behind every great man, there is a great woman

Despite what the titles may suggest, these dramas weren’t just about the king, and the last episodes, which aired on May 24, revealed that the real heroes, or shall we say heroines, of the dramas were Kim Hang Ah and Park Ha.

Consider who forces the bratty Lee Jae Ha to grow up in The King 2Hearts. Who encourages him to finish the 60 km race? And who holds Lee Jae Ha’s hand when he’s scared of Kim Bong Gu for the first time? Who shoots down Club M’s Bon Bon with a sniper—in a skirt? Who points the gun to Lee Jae Ha’s head to pressure her own country to step down during a pre-war negotiation?

If you haven’t answered Kim Hang Ah, we suggest you go watch the series over again.

It’s the same with Rooftop Prince.

We knew from the beginning that Park Ha was important. She was the one who took the lost Joseon men into her apartment and fed them fried rice every day. She was the one who taught them the ways of the modern world, even risking her life by teaching Lee Gak how to drive.

But Han Ji Min’s role proved to be the most important in the last episode. The drama began with the mysterious death of Lee Gak’s crown princess, which leads to Lee Gak time warping into the future to find out the secret.

It turned out the crown princess was actually Han Ji Min’s character in disguise, who purposely ate the king’s poisoned dried persimmons to save his life.

Later, when Lee Gak was shot by an arrow, he survived because the metal necklace that Park Ha had given him in the present deflected it. Whether in the past or in the present, Han Ji Min’s characters Park Ha and Bu Yong come to Lee Gak’s rescue.

These dramas aren’t about how the men achieved peace or solved the mystery, but what the women did to support the men to get to that point of success. And, it’s not until the end that we realize that these leading ladies definitely deserve a little more credit than what the drama titles suggest.

During the episode of SBS ‘Rooftop Prince’ that aired on the 23rd of May, Park Yoochun shed tears for his longing for Han Ji Min. Lee Gak (Park Yoochun) becomes time warped back to the Chosun Dynasty and solves the mystery of the murder.

During the episode, Bu Yong (Han Ji Min) dies after intentionally eating the dried persimmons that had poisonous powder on them provided by Hwa Yong (Hong Se Na) in order to save the crowned prince Lee Gak (Park Yoochun). Prior to the event, the princess (Hong Se Na) followed her father’s orders to put poison on the dried persimmons. Bu Yong catches on to the situation and asks Lee Gak to award him with the persimmons for solving Lee Gak’s riddle.

Bu Yong eats the poisoned persimmons and saves Lee Gak’s life. The reason Bu Yong ate the persimmons without revealing the evil plot was because she knew the danger her family could face if she revealed the truth.

Lee Gak finds a letter written by Bu Yong. Before her death, Bu Yong wrote ‘There are some good things about death. I can say something that I have kept secret all my life. I loved you. I was fond of you from the very beginning. I’ll live even in death, I’ll die even with life, even after hundreds of year, I will love you.’

From then on, Lee Gak cannot help but remember Park Ha (Han Ji Min) even after 300 years have passed. Lee Gak sheds tears remembering the members that had happened. Lee Gak writes a letter to Park Ha, ‘Park Ha, I arrived safely. How are you? If you could read this letter, it must be 300 years from now,’ and hid the letter under a pillar in the palace.

Park Ha finds the letter 300 years later in the present time and longs for the love of her life Lee Gak.

Park Yoo Chun has certainly had a great three years as an actor.

Sometimes it feels embarrassing to say an actor can act, because it doesn’t really sound like praise when that’s their job.

Still, when we see Park Yoo Chun acting as Lee Gak we can’t help but exclaim at how great an actor he is. Park Yoo Chun had his viewers laughing and crying with him in every episode of his dramas with his great skills.

Park Yoo Chun wasn’t just ‘an idol who could act’ from the start. He never lost his cool even when the script did because it was so rushed, and he led his own rediscovery after rediscovery.

Park Yoo Chun first tried his hand at acting through the drama Sungkyunkwan Scandal in 2010.

At the time, many were concerned because idol acting was rarely said to be that good, but Park Yoo Chun broke through the prejudice with his natural way of acting and showed how he had grown as a true actor.
